How do I tell carpenter ants from regular ants?
Carpenter ants are large (6–12 mm), usually black, and leave behind small piles of sawdust-like “frass” near baseboards or window sills. Unlike termites they don’t eat wood — they excavate it to nest, which is why they target damp or rotting framing. Because they cause structural damage over time, carpenter ant jobs include locating and treating the parent nest, not just spraying trails.
Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?
Most over-the-counter sprays are repellent — they kill foragers on contact but signal the colony to split and relocate, which often makes the problem worse. We use non-repellent baits the workers don’t detect, so they carry the active ingredient back and feed it to the queen and brood. That eliminates the colony at its source instead of scattering it.
Are the spider treatments safe indoors?
Yes. Interior work is targeted crack-and-crevice application in the spots spiders actually travel and hide, not broadcast spraying of living areas. We pair it with physical removal of webs and egg sacs, which has a big impact on its own, and focus chemical treatment on basements, garages, and entry points.
Which spiders in this area should I worry about?
The vast majority of spiders in central Ontario — house spiders, cellar spiders, and the occasional fishing spider near water — are nuisance pests, not dangerous. Ontario has no established populations of medically dangerous spiders, so our goal is keeping them out of living spaces.
